The Role

The Analytics team at AHADI is looking to recruit a candidate with strong coding and quantitative skills, strong mentoring skills, and an interest in using data analytics to support priority-setting and decision-making in countries with high disease burden. 

This position will focus on building rigorous and reproducible analysis codebases and databases as well as mentoring junior scientists. We are looking for a scientist with superb quantitative coding skills, a keen eye for data visualization, a proactive approach to solving problems, and excellent interpersonal skills. 

AHADI’s Analytics team analyzes field, trial, survey, routine health system, climate, and environmental data; develops, configures, calibrates, and applies disease transmission and geospatial models; and designs and builds new data and analytics solutions to answer questions aimed at informing public health decision-making. The team supports training, educational, and skills development initiatives offered by AHADI or our partners and is actively engaged with the broader health analytics community.

Responsibilities

We seek a Data Scientist/Biostatistician to manage, visualize, and analyze public health data, including epidemiological, ecological, financial, and other data, using multiple quantitative methods, and to train and mentor junior staff (Assistant Research and Technical Officers, and those in similar positions) in data science and public health analytics. 

The Data Scientist/Biostatistician is expected to act as a day-to-day role model, mentor, and resource for all junior staff, spending around half their time supporting the skills development and growth of junior staff and half their time on executing their own data and analysis work. The Data Scientist/Biostatistician must be highly flexible and able to adapt methodological and communication approaches to meet different needs.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Writes software code to manage, visualize, analyze, and model a variety of health data types
  • Creates robust software pipelines to reproducibly automate data ingestion, management, and analysis
  • Supports multiple AHADI initiatives as needed across the data and analysis pipeline
  • Identifies and applies appropriate quantitative and statistical methods, or software solution, for the problem at hand
  • Trains junior staff and supports the Analytics team to implement best practices for reproducible software development
  • Supports junior staff to deliver high quality code and technical outputs
  • Trains and collaborates with partner individuals and institutions to support upskilling of local public health analytics talent

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Supports, facilitates, and/or co-instructs in training initiatives offered by AHADI or its partners, as appropriate to the hire’s individual expertise
  • Prepares reports and presentations to effectively communicate methods and findings to stakeholders, including ministries of health and other partners
  • Prepares manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in data science, biostatistics, or related quantitative field
  • Experience in statistical analysis, including statistical tests and basic regressions
  • Experience in developing dashboards or other complex data visualizations
  • Experience in the responsible use of AI tools for coding
  • Kenyan citizen or with residency permit in Kenya
  • Able to work from AHADI’s Nairobi office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in management and/or analysis of epidemiological, public health, clinical trial, or other health data
  • Experience working with survey data, routine surveillance data, and/or raster data
  • Experience building geospatial models, predictive models, Bayesian models, and/or machine learning models
  • Experience in teaching or supervising technical staff at the bachelor’s or master’s level
  • Published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals

Minimum Competencies

  • Professional proficiency in English
  • Proficiency in data manipulation
  • Proficiency in at least one data analysis language (R or Python)
  • Proficiency in data visualization, including making maps
  • Clear and effective communication of technical work to non-experts
  • Ability to mentor and train others in data science and analytical techniques
  • Ability to foster a positive and growth-oriented team environment
  • Ability to deliver on multiple priorities and programs of work with diverse methodological approaches
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours to meet a deadline
  • Ability to work productively as part of a team as well as independently drive a program of work to completion
  • Ability to effectively deliver outputs and collaborate with team members in a remote, distributed working environment

Preferred Competencies

  • Professional proficiency in at least one of French, Portuguese, Arabic, or Swahili
  • Proficiency in database development and management
  • Proficiency in the development and use of AI agents
  • Professional-level software development skills
  • In depth knowledge of machine learning principles and methods
